Kennewick, Pasco Water Systems May Connect

February 10th, 2011

A proposal to connect Pasco and Kennewick’s water systems via an intertie pipe across the cable bridge has been met with skepticism by some city council members.

Apparently, the city’s new water treatment plant does not produce enough water to meet the city’s needs in the event that the older Butterfield plant was to become incapacitated.

The proposed project is included in the city’s comprehensive water plan and if the intertie existed, Kennewick could help Pasco in an emergency. The cost for the project is estimated at $2.8 million and would be shared by both cities. To view more detail about this story visit the Tri-City Herald.

Pasco WA Schools Expand

September 14th, 2010

Pasco Schools continue to expand. You can read this and more on the Pasco School District website at www.psd1.org.

At the conclusion of the three-day Labor Day weekend, enrollment numbers in the Pasco School District took another significant jump as expected with total enrollment now at 14,965 students, an increase of 712 students over this same time last year.

The District has already added ten portable classrooms in anticipation of the increase. More portables have been ordered and will be installed mid-year.

Enrollment increases on Sept. 7th were:

Grades K-5: 7,649, an increase of 341 students or 4.7% over day six in 2009
Grades 6-8: 3,364, an increase of 204 students or 6.5% over day six in 2009
Grades 9-12: 3,952, an increase of 167 students or 4.4% over day six in 2009

Student enrollment in the Pasco School District has steadily increased 4-6% per year for the past 10 years. With continued growth and new home construction in the city, District officials expect this trend to continue well into the future. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and an independent consulting firm both project that the student population in the Pasco School District will surpass 20,000 by 2016.
